What happens during vision and hearing screenings?

Hearing

Hearing screenings begin at the age of four. Of course, if you observe signs of hearing issues before that time, you’re encouraged to schedule an assessment. Kids who have a higher-than-average risk for hearing problems might also be screened before the age of 4. If screening shows signs of concern, an audiology evaluation is the next step.

Vision

Vision screenings begin at the age of 3. These simple exams include having your child read an eye chart. Dr. Atkins looks for signs of common vision problems. If you or your child’s teacher or caregiver suspects a vision issue, be sure to book a screening right away. 

You don’t have to take any special steps to book hearing or vision screenings. This form of testing occurs during normal well child examinations. 

What if my child’s vision or hearing screening shows areas of concern?

If Dr. Atkins finds areas of concern, he begins by asking you questions about your child’s hearing or vision. If more involved testing is indicated, he helps you connect with the right provider to meet your child’s needs.
